the need for speed

When I retired from work, my colleagues, knowing my love of all things automotive, very kindly gifted me a supercar track day.

And today saw me at Llandow race circuit near Bridgend here in South Wales to live out my supercar dream.

Now, I’ve raced many, many (probably in the high hundreds) laps around this circuit so I could consider myself somewhat expert at it.  Until you realise that these laps were spent at around 25mph on a racing bike propelled by nothing more than muscle power, and certainly nowhere near the speeds that the cars I drove today were capable of.

But I enjoyed every single second in (list coming up):

-       a BMW i8 (the most modern car there today with its hybrid power plant)
-       a Porsche 911
-       an Audi R8
-       a Ferrari F430.

I’m glad I chose these cars as they covered the whole range from ultra-modern (the BMW) to old school mechanical grunt and seat of your pants, roller-coaster sheer terror (from the 911).  The fastest car I felt was the F430.  But the best car overall?  It’s got to be the Audi.  I know I’ve got one so I’m biased but honestly, out of all these great cars the R8 had the most linear power delivery, best brakes, most comfortable seats and it was easy to drive.

That’s why if I ever found myself in a fortunate enough position to be able to buy such a car it would have to be……………..

a Porsche 911.
