a lifetime in cars
I’ve always been a petrol head
and lover of all things automotive. As a
young boy, I could name every car on the road.
I used to read car magazines whenever I could and was always on the lookout
for new and strange vehicles. This love
has never diminished and we now have 3 cars in our family: an Audi TT, Ford
Fiesta ST and (the latest addition) a lovely Mazda MX5 soft top.
I subscribe to several car
channels on YouTube and love immersing myself in the supercar lifestyle (if
only I could own one for just a short while).
I know. I need to grow up!
Anyway, whilst reading a car
forum on the internet I came across a very interesting thread asking posters to
name a favourite car from each decade they have been alive. It would be rude I think not to have a go, so
here is my (yes, I know, yet another one) list.
1960s: Aston Martin DB5
An easy choice. The car driven by 007 of course. I had the Corgi toy one that fired plastic
rockets, had a bullet proof shield and (of course) an ejector seat.
1970s: Ferrari 512 BB
There were 2 poster cars of the
70s. A Lamborghini Countach or this
Ferrari. I was firmly in the Ferrari
camp and, yes, had a giant poster of the Ferrari on my bedroom wall (next to
the one of Debbie Harry!).
1980s: Porsche 911
My first ever car was a beaten
up, yellow and rust VW Beetle. Of
course, the DNA of the Porsche is firmly rooted in that of the Beetle (rear
engine, air cooled – yes keep dreaming) so it’s natural that I should love the
Porsche with its huge rear spoiler and terrifying performance and
handling. I still really really (really)
want one. Really.
1990s: Ferrari F40
Another battle between
Lamborghini (their Diablo this time) and the Ferrari for pride of place on
bedroom walls. Being more of a Ferrari fan
I had a poster of the F40 on my garage wall.
2000s: Porsche Carrera GT
Yes, I know. Another Porsche. I love the look and sound of
this car which, for me, together with the McLaren F1 was the forerunner of today’s
hyper cars.
2010s: Pagani Huayra
The most difficult choice as
there are so many wonderful cars now available.
But the Pagani just edges it for me on its looks and incredible
attention to detail in its manufacture. Carbon fibre, titanium, more carbon
fibre. What’s not to love?
And my favourite car of all time? Got to be the 911.
Please. I’ll be really good. Promise.
All your picks are great looking cars, but I'm a Corvette girl myself. ;)
