little white lies

A few years ago my mother and father in law were the proud owners of an old type CRT television.  This was essentially a huge grey plastic box with a minuscule screen placed in the corner of the room.

I would regularly nag my father in law to keep up with the times and invest in a modern television with a screen large enough to be seen more than a few feet from it.  He was keen to do so but my mother in law was of the opinion that as long as the TV was working it did not need replacing.

Imagine my surprise then one Saturday morning to receive a telephone call from my father in law to tell me that the TV would no longer switch on and that a replacement was needed. Sure enough, I visited them and the TV was indeed dead - not operable remotely or directly.

A new TV was needed.

I asked my father in law whether he had checked the fuse.  "Of course" came the reply but it was far from convincing.  In fact I'm certain the fuse had been removed from the plug deliberately so a shiny new plasma screen TV was bought.

A few months later, I was watching our by then 4 year old LCD TV which had been faultless.  However I wanted a 3D TV but how to get this passed my wife who takes after her mother when it comes to spending money.

One evening I was watching the TV alone when there was s huge flash accompanied with some smoke from the back the TV - honestly there was.  The TV carried on working but of course there was no way we could carry on using it so a new plasma screen 3D TV was sought and purchased.

It'a still performing faultlessly but I fancy one of those new 4K TVs.

Is that smoke I can smell......
