caught red handed

I was always a very conscientious worker throughout my career from the very start right up to my last day in work.

One of my previous jobs saw me investigate people who may have committed benefit fraud.  This involved gathering evidence and where necessary interviewing the suspect.  This all had to be done in accordance with the Police and Criminal Evidence Act so was quite a stressful process - particularly the interview.

One day a colleague and I conducted a total of 8 interviews in a day, starting at 9am, working through our lunch and finishing at 4pm.

We returned to our office from the interview room and, spying a daily paper, I collapsed into my chair, put my feet up and started to read the sports section.

At this precise moment my section head decided to pop her head around the door.  "Nice to see some people have time on their hands to read the paper" she said before vanishing into the corridor.

About one year and a change of role later I was sat in the presenting officer's waiting room standing by to present a benefit tribunal case on behalf of my employer.  I treated these cases like mini examinations of my knowledge and always prepared well for each one.

Unfortunately the case before mine over ran so I was kept waiting.  I'd gone over the details of my case a couple of times and had nothing else to do so put my feet up on the desk and began playing tetris on my phone.

Unbelievably, at that exact moment, my section head (who was giving evidence in another tribunal case) decided to pop her head in to say hello.  Her reaction was priceless.

I should have known better and from that day on my paranoia levels increased ten fold!
