33 (and a third)

I wrote some time ago on the decline of vinyl LP record buying and how it detracted from the games we used to be able to play on a Saturday afternoon in town trying to guess what was in someone’s record bag.

Well it seems that vinyl is experiencing something of a resurgence particularly among the kids and the hipsters who are yearning after the analogue experience we had growing up.

So, I decided to jump on this particular bandwagon and buy myself a turntable.

I then realised that I had given all my LP’s away a few years ago, but found a box full of 45’s in the loft to sate my appetite before I could get to a second hand record store.

A week on and I’ve amassed a small collection of 10 records.  I’m really enjoying listening to whole albums.  With CD’s and particularly computer files it is so easy to skip through tracks at the click of a button; so you didn’t get that whole album experience.  I’m limiting myself to buying albums that were released in the years before CD’s took over, but one thing I find surprising though is the price premium for new vinyl.  It’s like the early days of CD only in reverse.

Whatever, I am now oh so hip and trendy.  So much so that I think I’ll grow a beard and get my Afghan coat down from the attic.

And the guessing games are back.

  1. I used to love listening to whole albums too! You got to hear the less played tracks that were often much better than the popular ones! Have fun!
