something new

Last September I ordered a new car: a shiny VW Golf GTi.  I’d always wanted one and the scandal VW were facing with their emissions fiasco didn’t phase me or put me off.

But my following experiences did:

-            the VW factory lost my order meaning I’d have to wait another 3 months for my car
-            one of the options I wanted then became unavailable
-            unbelievably VW lost my order again!

All this meant that I had lost any excitement about owning my new car.  I felt that it was jinxed.  A “Friday afternoon” car that would be beset by all manner of faults and problems.  So I cancelled it and renewed my search for a new car.

The choice quickly boiled down to either a 2 year old Porsche Cayman or a brand new Audi TT.

Despite the obvious Audi / VW link I plumped for the TT.

yes it's mine..........all mine.  And the car!!

Now there are all sorts of ribald comments about this being a hairdresser’s or an air hostess’s car.  But I love it.  I love the new technology.  I love the experience of driving it.  I love the fact that the rear seats are useless unless you cut your legs off.

But most of all I love the new found independence it has given me.  Yes, I could have bought something less extravagant but for me it’s all about the journey, not the destination.  Not just a trip in the car, but life itself.  You see, I can get in my car and drive myself somewhere.  But I can’t then get out and go for a walk at the other end.

And this I feel mirrors my life: there’s very little to look forward to in the long term so I may as well enjoy the ride while getting there.

  1. Exactly! I live by the motto 'Eat dessert first!" Same premise. I don't want to be on my death bed saying "I should have......." Enjoy your new car, you deserve it after all you've been through!!!

  2. Good choice Nick. Don't think you'll regret not going for the Golf......enjoy it. Assume that's your car in the pic? Which model?

  4. Beautiful looking car Nick. Getting in and out of it is only going to enhance your physio programme as I imagine you will be doing a lot of that.
