my last day

I was driving through my home town the other day when I passed by one of my former employer’s satellite offices.  Nothing strange there you might think.

But it was the first time I had seen this place for about 3 years and the memory of my last visit there came back.

It was in October 2014 and I had to attend a meeting there.  I was already experiencing severe back pain and the day before had gone to hospital for an x-ray on it to try to isolate the problem I was having.  After the meeting, I tried to pick up a box of leaflets I had agreed to take there from the boot of my car when I experienced the most excruciating back pain.

I got back to my office, saw my boss, explained what happened and arranged to go home early that day as by that time I was feeling really unwell and struggling to concentrate on anything other than the pain in my back which had not gone away.  I thought nothing more of it though, that it would be better by the morning and I’d be back at my desk.

Still nothing of note then, until I realised that that was my very last day in work.  Ever.  After I got home, I decided to take a bath to try to ease the pain and it was right then that my GP called me to tell me my back was broken, probably by myeloma and I needed to go to hospital right away. The memory of that phone call is etched in my mind.  It will never go away.   The rest, as they say, is history!

So, this casual drive by brought back memories of my last day as a working man.  Memories of a job I loved and people who made it a joy to go to work each day.

  1. Well.....the silver lining is that you once had a job you loved and great coworkers! Not everyone gets to have that!
