I miss Percy

At the start of July, we had an unexpected visitor.  A beautiful light grey racing pigeon had somehow found its way into our garden.

Not having the first idea what to do after it became apparent he wasn’t going to fly off any time soon, we of course took to Google to get feeding and watering instructions to make sure that at least he didn’t starve while he was with us.

After a couple of days, I managed to retrieve the number on his ringed foot.  It was what looked like a telephone number, so we rang it and indeed spoke to the bird’s owner: a gentleman from Maesteg – some 20 miles as the crow, or rather the pigeon, flies from us.

He called over and tried to lure who we had now called Percy into a crate.  But he was having none of it.  The owner suggested we try to coax Percy into our shed.  Simple we thought.

We were wrong.

Percy it seemed was rather too clever for us.  He would go into the shed and then transfer his food to the step outside before flying back to the shed roof where he had by now taken up residence.  This then became our routine throughout July. Moving his food and water further into the shed, until finally….

It took over 2 weeks to finally catch Percy and get him back to his proper home.  Strangely we miss him, but Dexter was quite distraught. For a few days he would dash outside in the morning and look for Percy.

Anyway, the owner has warned us that due to the time Percy spent with us, and the fact that we had fed him rather too well that he may well return.

I’m sure Dexter will be chuffed.

ooooh, a playmate

post script: dateline 1 August 2018.  The pigeon is back!!
