landscape v portrait

No, not genres of photography, but compositional orientation.

I shoot about half of my images in each - so, some horizontal and some vertical photographs.  What I decide to shoot depends on the subject and conditions really.  If I want more of the sky, I tend to shoot in portrait orientation.  Same goes for when I want to really stretch perspective with a wide-angle lens.

I use an L-bracket to enable rapid "orientation" switches

Then, if I want to capture more of a scene I'll shoot in landscape.

Simple really.

Rather than completely re-set my tripod head and have to re-level when I want to switch orientation, I use an L-bracket which gives me a tripod plate mount on the bottom and on the side of my camera.  This saves me a ton of effort when switching and keeps the weight of my kit centred over the tripod instead of hanging off to one side.

The other night while shooting sunset at Limeslade Bay though I really couldn't decide.  The sky wasn't all that interesting, but I preferred the look of my portrait shot as I felt it made more of the cutting into the rocks and the sea in the foreground.

Anyway, here are both images.  Which one do you prefer?

  1. I prefer landscape......portrait (unless it's an actual portrait, lol) always makes me feel like I'm missing something just out of the frame! :-/
