rules, rules, rules

Yes I know I'm supposed to be on a break, but I just had to write this.  Sorry!

At time of writing (13 April 2021) Covid restrictions are slowly being lifted and rules amended.  I'm listening to a legal "expert" on the radio while he answers listener's questions about what we are and more importantly are not allowed to do.

The rules have changed and goalposts moved throughout this pandemic.  To the extent that I have literally zero idea what is legal and what isn't.  And neither it seems do our politicians, some of whom have broken the rules or when asked cannot give any sort of definitive answer.

One questioner just asked if they could travel from Wales to England to see a dying relative.

"Yes" was the answer but it was then qualified to such a length that the expert might as well have said something along the lines of "you can go, but can't stay the night unless you form a bubble and no other bubble is already in existence unless you go on a Tuesday and it's a full moon and your surname starts with a consonant or a Thursday and your first name has an odd number of letters or it's a weekend but only  then if no other relative has visited unless they travelled by train or steam boat on the immediately preceding day and has had a negative PCR test or had both doses of the vaccine and is related to a serving member of the armed forces (except the Royal Navy) and has returned from active service within the last 72 hours without travelling through a red or amber listed country and any relative or contact has not been on holiday to Goa at any time in the past three years and...

You get my drift.

Rules will be broken if they are too complex or change with little or no notice.  Intelligent people genuinely have no clue what they are or are not allowed to do.  Couple that with inconsistent policing of the rules by different police forces which see some people get fined and criminalised while others are just warned.

There seems to be little in the way of common sense being employed here.  But then again, this is a government that has failed at every step along the way of this pandemic and is more than happy to shift the blame onto a public that has continually broken the rules.

I give up.

  2. Up until the end of March it was illegal to fly overseas unless for a few very good reasons like work or education but then Boris changed the rules so people with a holiday home abroad could legally travel in order to prepare it for sale or rental or to visit an estate agent. All done to appease Boris's father who just happens to have a holiday home in Greece......it has been called the "Stanley Johnson clause"!!!!!!!!Google it. It is still no use at all to us though as Spain is yet to open its air and sea borders to the Brits........maybe next month????
