the thick legged hover fly
Over the summer I managed to photograph a few of the insects and pollinators that graced our garden on one of the few fine, sunny and warm days we had.
There were the bees of course, some butterflies (not many sadly), wasps, sawflies, assorted other flying things, spiders and these little beauties - the thick-legged hover fly.
At just about 5mm in length they're not exactly easy to spot and photograph, especially given their dislike for being still for any length of time. Getting close enough with a camera usually saw them fly off straight away.
But I got to know that if you saw one resting to leave it for a few minutes before trying to photograph it that you might just get lucky. Here are just a couple of images I got (including one where it was the fly that "got lucky"!).
