in flight movie

Photographing bugs is tricky. Photographing them in flight (successfully) is really hard.  These two images show the two extremes of getting it just right and failing completely perfectly!

Fujifilm X-H2, TTArtisans 100mm f2.8 2x macro lens
1/1500th of a second at f2.8, ISO 125
handheld

Fujifilm X-T2. Fujinon 100-400mm f4.5-5.6 @ 400mm
1/680th of a second at f5.6, ISO 200
handheld

In both images, I managed to focus on the creature, but the slower lens used to capture the butterfly meant that even at 1/680th of a second I was unable to freeze its motion sufficiently.

Focus was easier in the second image as I was further from the subject and using a smaller aperture.  I guess the extra light available when photographing the hoverfly was a lucky break for me for once.

I'm happy with both images but for different reasons.  The top one is a detailed study of the insect in flight, whereas the second one has a little more artistic flair to it.  That's what I'm claiming anyway!

  1. Completely agree that both are great images done in different styles.
    I think they're both fabulous.
If you were wanting a less blurry image of the butterfly maybe there's room to bump the ISO up a fair bit?
