on the rocks
It's been a bumper summer for seeing butterflies, moths and skippers this year. I can honestly say I've seen more in the past week than I saw in the whole of last year. I've no idea why this should be so, other than maybe the warm, dry spring we enjoyed.
Anyway, I spotted this red admiral butterfly chilling on a stony pavement while on a regular nature stroll recently. I thought it was a strange spot for such a creature, and even stranger when it didn't immediately fly away.
Thankfully it did finally remember that it was a winged insect and took off, landing on some nearby buddleia!
