I've always had an issue when photographing dead insects. I have done it but looking at the results afterwards I think that I can't really claim much in the way of credit for the image. But what if the creature is still alive but in some way incapacitated? Like the subject of today's image - a European hornet - found in my garden and clearly in need of some assistance. Whenever we find bees, etc. in a sorry state we try to get them to drink some sugary water to help them regain their strength. And this hornet was no different, with the life-giving elixir poured onto a leaf it was resting on. I decided to take its picture after it had drunk the liquid in the hope of it recovering and flying off. Sadly this one didn't make it and about thirty minutes after the image was taken its now lifeless body remained on the leaf where I left it. What do you think? Is it fair game to grab these shots?
