that shrinking feeling
Since my stay in hospital and return home I have been losing weight.
I think this down to three main reasons:
- eating smaller portions of food
- my drugs (especially the steroids) increasing my metabolism
- my reduced mobility and tiredness leading to muscle atrophy.
Whatever, the signs of my weight loss are visible from my upper arms to my ankles where everything is smaller - especially my legs and, erm, derriere which has all but vanished. I'm not sure even that following my back surgery I may even be a little bit shorter than I used to be.
But I think it all came home to roost, so to say, when one evening earlier this week I was walking between our lounge and bedroom (we live in a bungalow) when my trousers decided to migrate from their usual position around my waste to my ankles within the first four steps.
This as you can imagine was a great source of amusement to my wife and daughter; it was just as well we had no visitors at the time. It was reminiscent of an old Brian Rix farce.
I couldn't see the funny side at first but soon had to join in with the laughter.
No matter, I shall soon regain muscle mass again so no need for any shopping trips - just a case of elasticated waste trousers for a while.
Now I know I am growing old.

I'll gladly share some of my extra pounds if you can figure out how! ;)
ReplyDeleteLosing weight in your situation has got to be seen as a positive Nick. By carrying less weight it will surely make what's going on with your spine a lot more bearable and, hopefully, less painful.
ReplyDeleteSorry to hear about the MM. I have a friend in Seattle who has had it for years, 6 or 7 years now. He's in some kind of remission now, hasn't been in the hospital for several years, after having 2 transplants, and has done lots of skiing and hiking and traveling and seems to be back to full strength. And he is an arborist- climbs trees for a living!
