I don’t know why, and it’s quite
surprising given my interest in all things camera, but I’ve never been
interested in the cinematic or film experience.
Perhaps it’s because I got
punched by a grown man while watching the first Star Wars film when I was a
child (he thought I was talking over the film when in fact it was the person
behind me – and I hit him back as hard as I could trust me), but I’ve never
really got “it”.
My nephew, Sam, is a total film
buff. No, he’s more than that; he’s obsessive,
and he can’t understand my complete ambivalence. But I just don’t enjoy it. I don’t like being in a room with strangers,
putting up with their foibles and noisy habits.
The price of going is frankly terrifying and there’s never, ever
anything I want to watch.
I can just about sit through a
DVD at home, and as is usual, I have compiled a list of features that I have
enjoyed through the years. Again, I don’t
think there’s anything of great artistic merit, but then I’m not watching
something to experience the finer nuances of the director’s feelings that day.
So, in no particular order I give
you:
The Odd Couple – the funniest
film ever made. Ever. Full stop.
Don’t even argue!
Gladiator – pure escapism at its
greatest. On my command…unleash Hell!
The Deer Hunter – a tricky one as
it is just so bloody long. So long in
fact I’ve never watched it through in one viewing!
American Graffiti – for the music
and the teenage angst.
Apollo 13 – just of course. Of course.
Young Guns – I’m your
huckleberry!
And that’s, um, just about it.
I'm with Sam on this one. Sorry.....
