you get what you pay for

I love printing the best of the photographs I take.  And especially now with my new ultra-high-resolution camera.

But I recently hit on a problem.

I use 3rdparty inks in my Canon printer.  Always have and I’ve been really pleased with the results. Prints are always accurate and look exactly like they do on my computer screen.

There are steps I take to ensure this:

-       I calibrate my iMac’s screen regularly to make sure colours, white point, brightness, etc. are all optimised
-       I regularly clean and re-calibrate the printer nozzles and head
-       I download and install the correct ICC paper profiles for the paper I’m using.

However, when I had cause to swap out some cartridges recently, my prints instantly became way too dark.  I went through all my usual steps but to no avail.

So, I put in some genuine Canon cartridges and hey-presto my prints looked great again.

how much?!?!?!?!

Problem solved then?

Well kind of.  You see genuine Canon inks cost a small fortune.  Three times the cost of the 3rdparty copies.  But I guess if there are consistency or QC issues with those inks, they’ll quickly become very costly and I’ll struggle to trust my printer’s output.

As the title of this moan suggests though, you get what you pay for, so I’ll be sticking to genuine Canon inks from now on.
