back to Dunraven Bay

I always think that this location sounds like it should be in New Zealand!

But it’s not.  It’s only around 25 miles or a 45-minute drive away from home.  So, one day last month, around a year or so since my last visit there, I persuaded Lisa to drive me to the Glamorgan Heritage Coast as the forecast was for clearing skies after a day of torrential rain, just around sunset.

Of course, though, I’m not that lucky.  It was still raining when we got there and to get this image meant getting my camera wet.  Luckily it is weather sealed, so I had no worries about exposing it to the elements for a short period anyway.

I got 2 images.  The first was for one of my projects, and then I got this image to share here.

Fujifilm GFX50R, Fujinon 32-64mm lens at 32mm
18 seconds at f11, ISO 100
tripod, self-timer release

Yet again it’s my simple yet trusted land – sea – sky composition, but I shot it with a 6-stop filter to extend the exposure time to give that misty, ethereal look to the sea as it broke over the rocks.  It gives the image a very calm look, in stark contrast to the actual conditions of wind, rain and the thunderous sound of the tide shifting the huge rocks around with ease such was its force.

Sometimes, you just have to photograph the light.

  1. Another amazing shot! (....and my feet hurt just LOOKING at those rocks! How does one walk on them?)

  2. Very nice capture Nick...in my continuing "education" of the UK'S geography, I enjoyed having to Crack open Google Earth again to check out this location..looks like a beauty. Ironically, as I was looking at your image and the Google imagery, one of my favorite tunes popped on, "Walk on the Ocean" by a band called Toad The Wet Sprocket. Greetings from freeeeeeezing US east coast.
