When I was at the seaside recently, I happened upon one of nature’s wonders – a “mermaid’s purse”.

Now this obviously isn’t where some mythical siren kept her credit cards, but it’s the name for a pouch which contains a developing shark.

Despite years of living near and visiting the coast I had never seen such a complete one before.  Being washed up on the beach it no longer contained the fishy embryo but was no less beautiful or wonderful for being used.

Anyway, here’s my snapshot of one for anyone else who, like me, has never seen one so lovely before.

It’s always worth visiting the beach just after high tide to see what’s recently been washed up.  You never know what you might find.
