history in the making

So, at 11pm tonight my home country ends its membership of the European Union.  Some people are calling it “Independence Day” and are celebrating with parties and all the trimmings.  Some, on the other hand, are devastated at the divorce and can see no future for the UK.

Me. I’m a bit “meh”.  I have been since the referendum to decide the country’s future was announced, held and then decided.

I do think that we will suffer economically in the short term, and Wales in particular will lose out on millions in regional funding.

But I do not like the direction Europe is heading in, with the rise of the far right in many countries (particularly in eastern Europe) which is bound to eventually have a dangerous effect on the running of the EU.  So, in that respect I think we are better off outside the tent and peeing in.

Only time will tell of course whether the UK has made the right decision.  There are already rumblings of Scotland wanting its independence and if that happens then surely Wales and Northern Ireland will follow suit and the United Kingdom as it stands now will cease to exist, let alone Europe.

Tomorrow morning the UK will wake up outside of Europe though.  And for good or bad I think it’s all very sad right now.

  1. I worry the world is spinning out of control.......but then I remember what my father used to tell me, "The pendulum will swing back in time" and it gives me hope. (Unfortunately, I don't think I'll live long enough to see it....LOL.....but.....there's hope that calmer heads will prevail.)
