just, why???

I've always harped on about how lucky I am living where I do.

I mean, stuck on the coast halfway between the beauty of the Gower Peninsula with its beaches, and areas of woodland to the south, and the majesty of the Brecon Beacons with towering mountains, glorious parks, and stunning waterfalls to the north.

That I spend most of my time heading north is no surprise.  While the love and draw of the sea will never leave me, the mountains, rivers and forests of the Beacons are my first love.

And whenever my sister comes home to visit, her first request is always to head inland.

The Brecon Beacons National Park is a truly world-famous location, and it was one of the first areas to be designated national park status in the UK, attaining this status in 1957.

So, imagine my surprise when turning on the news today (17 April) and hearing that it will no longer be known by its internationally recognised moniker, but from now on will be called Bannau Brycheiniog, which in English means the "peaks of Brychan's kingdom".

Presumably the full name now then is the peaks of Brychan's kingdom, erm, national park?

Now, I'm all for Wales retaining, promoting and furthering its heritage and agree that places and signs should be bilingual.  But why change the name of such an iconic and renowned area?

Last year Snowdonia National Park changed its name to Eryri and the mountain of Snowdon to yr Wyddfa, so perhaps its southern counterpart decided they needed to make the change as well.

Why do we always have to interfere with things that seriously need no interfering with?  Who knows, but I'll always proudly call it by its original name.

Anyway, if you've had enough of (changing) Welsh place names you could do a lot worse than watch this week's tech Tuesday video, in which I take a deep dive into my digital media storage and workflow.  Dear Lord, I've bored myself to tears just typing those words out…

There is a chance this might be my last video for a while, so if you get withdrawal symptoms when I don't release one then it's a must watch.  If you're a sane, normal person then you can probably just give it a miss.

    1. Presumably not in Welsh.

  2. Its original name would surely have been in Welsh. ‘Brecon Beacons’ would have been imposed by the English. Just saying. (I’m not advocating the name change at all - I suspect no one will use it anyway, especially those who can’t get their tongues around Welsh words!).
Yes, it’s your sister again ❤️
