the detail blew me away

My favourite lens of all time is my (deep breath) Micro Nikkor AFS 105mm 2.8G VR ED.  I prefer to simply call it the goat.  The greatest of all time!  Or Keith (but more on that on Thursday...).

I've made some of my most favourite macro images with it over the past several years, but recently found myself wanting a macro lens I could mount onto my Fujifilm cameras without the need for an adapter, and I settled on an all manual Laowa 65mm f2.8.

It too takes superb images, but it's not a patch on my goat.

So, whenever I want to tell a story I reach for the Nikon gear.  But when I want or need that crisp analytical detail, I reach for the Laowa.

And it was while in my garden with the Laowa that I spotted this pied hover fly and I decided to see how close and just how much detail this lens could manage.  And I was absolutely blown away when I saw the results.  Here is just one of the images I captured.

The Laowa is badged as an "ultra-macro" lens.  And while this nomenclature is there to indicate that it has a massive 2:1 reproduction ratio (so the image is portrayed and captured on your camera's sensor at twice life size) I think it could easily be used to describe the ultra-amazing results you get with it!

This week's video sees me down in the woods, capturing dark, murky macro images.  Not with the Laowa though, but with my (goat) Nikkor lens!
