a tortoise shell butterfly on some buddleia
Here's a shot of a tortoise shell butterfly which I originally mis identified (quite how I don't know!) as a red admiral.!
Anyway, it's in my garden on a buddleia bush I planted last year. It didn't flower until this summer and now it's doing its job in attracting butterflies(usually red admirals in my defence!) into my garden. Lovely!

Cracking photo, think that one's a small tortoiseshell?
ReplyDeleteBuddleia are great for butterflies, a neighbour of mine has one hanging over a fence so I sometimes go there for a butterfly fotofix.
An exciting moment recently was a hummingbird hawk moth, I'd never seen one before.
I'm posting this with zero expectation it'll actually appear! I'm also posting as "anonymous" as when I try to post under my blogger account I get asked to log in (even though I already am!!). Anyway, here goes:
ReplyDeletethanks Graham. I of course mis ID's the species as a RA when you are correct, it is a tortoise shell. I am just so used to seeing RA's on the buddleia in my garden!
We get the very odd hummingbird hawk moth here. I've only ever seen two - both in the last few weeks in my garden! Impossible to photograph the buggers!!
