dramatic dahlias

The excitement in the garden is never ending.  Never ending I tell you.  And if it's not the insects then it's the flowers.  Now, while they may look beautiful, getting them to look dramatic is another story.  

But one technique I like to practice is on a very bright and sunny day, choose a brilliant white flower and spot meter my camera on the flower's brightest part.  Then by dialling in one to two negative stops of exposure compensation it's possible to create dramatic, arty shots just like this one of some lovely white dahlias below.
