just what I always wanted

Many years ago, while still able to go out and about and take land and seascape pictures, I invested in a geared head for my tripod.

Now, if you don't know what such a thing is, it's basically a very bulky bit of equipment that enables very tiny compositional adjustments on three axises acksieze, axijowedfuwef axes.  It's so much more accurate than say a ball head, but when I stopped going out as much and started concentrating more on macro and nature stuff, I figured I no longer needed it (that was a mistake by the way) and sold it.

For the next few years I relied on my ball head and all was (sort of) well until last year when, after twelve years of use) it started to become less reliable, looser and much more floppy.  A metaphor for my own life maybe!

So, I decided to replace it with...

...no, not a rock lit and photographed to look like an asteroid in the void of space, but...

...another geared head!

Only this time I went left-field, and got a sort of hybrid geared head.  No, it's not powered by petrol and electricity, but consists of a ball head for rapid deployment and then a geared upper portion for more accurate compositional adjustments.  And most importantly it holds my gear rock solid - really necessary for my style of photography where spot-on composition and focus bracketing are the norm.

Anyway, here's a video (of course there's a video - there's always a video) I made all about it...
