mission... accomplished?
Back on 6 July I posted a, well, post titled "My Life's Mission", you can read it by clicking here.
In essence, I wanted to take a better photograph of a hummingbird hawk moth than the rather paltry example I'd managed to that date.
And until yesterday (2 August at time of writing) I figured I was going to fail. I managed to grab this next shot of one actually resting on a flower (rare, as they're usually always in flight) shortly after my initial post, but again, it's not terribly good.
I do quite like its little curled up proboscis thingy though. Very cute! Anyway, the next day I got these incredibly rushed grabs; again utterly useless.
Then they stopped coming into the garden. For the next couple of weeks I'd sit outside in the sun in the hope of one flying into the garden but nothing. Not a sausage. Or a moth.
Until...
Late yesterday afternoon I was watching a butterfly on my buddleia (yes, my life is that exciting) when the moth flew just past my head and landed on a small bird box we have on our garage wall. And it stayed there. Until I got my camera, by when it had of course flown away. But at least I knew they were still returning to the garden; it was just that I'd not seen one.
So, armed with my camera again I sat out and waited. And around two hours later (yes, my life is that exciting), BINGO. A hummingbird hawk moth arrived and started flying around the buddleia. More importantly, it hung around for a good few minutes enabling me to shoot around thirty images and grab some slow-motion video.

In the late afternoons, the buddleia is in shade, meaning a slower shutter speed and higher ISO than desired. But in the morning it is in full sun, so I sit here in hope of one of the little blighters buzzing in again. If I get a better picture, I'll be sure to post it here.
