how much

Last month I was reminded of the most expensive photograph ever sold (an image called Rhein II by Andreas Gorsky) when printing out an image for my sister.

I don't know if you've seen it, but even if you had then it's unlikely you'd remember. Anyway, if you haven't seen it, it's basically 6 alternating grey and green bands:

sky
grass
river
grass
footpath
grass.

I don't want to post the image here for copyright reasons, but if you search for 'Rhein II', 'most expensive photo ever', 'more money than sense' or 'whoa, how lucky did I just get' then you'll stumble across it.  By the way, it sold for $4.3 million.  Yes, that's right, million.

Just to clarify, Corinne's photo is nothing like this, other than the colours employed; but is a much, much more exciting image of a ditch, in Kent, on a foggy day.....

I thought I'd be able to do better, but being unable to pop off to Germany (or even Kent for that matter) at the drop of a hat meant I had to look back into my library of photographs.  I happened upon a picture taken in 2010 while visiting the Spanish island of Majorca (this is the same as Germany only with more sun. and with more Germans actually) which reminded me of Andreas's image.

I actually quite like his picture for its simplicity.  Whether I'd have spent any money buying it is quite another thing.  My picture, although not quite as simple, mirrors Andreas's in that it contains grey sky and grey water.  I'm sure you'll agree that it's much more jolly?

Now, if we can just start the bidding at, oh I don't know, $5 million.....

  1. Seriously? $4.3 million? For that? Where can I sell mine?
