wi-fi. Why...

...is it so flaming complicated?

Just before the whole world ended I made a decision to change my ageing Apple Airport Express router for something more modern.  The Apple one was struggling to reach parts of my small house, due in no small part to its solid wall construction blocking signals.

Now, the Apple one had been an absolute doddle to set up.  It was just plug and play and the most complex step was thinking up an easy to remember but secure password.  It worked seamlessly with my Apple devices and provided a means for me to wirelessly back up all my stuff.

But Apple have stopped making wireless routers so I had to get something else and after a deal of research settled on a product from Lynksys.

When it arrived I set aside a half-hour or so to decommission the old Apple router and get this new one up and running.

And now, five months later, I've actually got it working to some degree of satisfaction.

Why in this age of extreme technological advances should something as simple as home wi-fi be so difficult?

The new router would drop signal strength and speed, disconnect wireless clients and just do stupid completely irrational things at random times.

My laptop would work flawlessly for days and then, boom, no wifi.  Same with my iMac and any other device you'd care to mention.

When Lisa started working from home her work laptop connected just fine for three weeks but then just wouldn't, meaning that she had to connect it to the router with a cable for everything to work.

Devices placed right next to the router would not connect until suddenly and without changing anything they just would.  Only to disconnect a week or so later necessitating turning everything off and back on again (oh yes, that oh so technical solution) to get stuff to work.

But it saved its tour de force for my wireless speaker.

This was set up in my garage and was working just fine.  I then decided though that it would serve us better in the lounge so I turned it off and moved it from my (detached and separated by two solid brick walls) garage and put it within 10 feet of the router with absolutely no obstructions in between.  The speaker won't work,  or rather it will and then it won't.

No matter what I do (and trust me I've tried everything) I can't resolve the problem.

The hammer is poised.

post script:

I've just listened to a radio program where the black lives matter movement was debated.  In it, they referenced the phrase "all lives matter" (i.e. the title of last Thursday's post on here) and basically stated that the use of these very words is essentially racist.  I couldn't quite believe my ears.  They are, the commentator opined, rubbishing the meaning of black lives matter by detracting from the fact that black people's lives and experiences are different.

I fail to see the connection.

Surely anyone with an ounce of love for the human race would understand that all lives matter regardless of the colour of the skin it is wrapped in.

Not it seems some.

This just reinforces the fact that nowadays you can't really say anything for fear of it being misconstrued.  Anyone who knows me knows that I am not  racist.  My use of these words was to show that I care about everyone.  This is obviously not enough for some.

No wonder people give up.
