mean streets

Although I’m essentially a landscape photographer, I do enjoy the art form in general.  In particular I’m a fan of good street photography.

Henri Cartier Bresson coined the phrase “the decisive moment” and those three words perfectly encapsulate the genre.  It’s all about seeing and capturing that split second in time.  Too early too late and the moment is gone.  But get it right and the images can be quite stunning.

If you can, check out Bresson’s work.  You won’t be disappointed.

To go back a bit though, I’ve never given street photography a good go.  This is mainly because as a photographer I have little in the way of luck, and therefore capturing that “decisive moment” has never been on my radar.

Undeterred though I set out with my tiny Fujifilm camera over the past few days to see what I could get.  Now, while these images aren’t that good, and maybe don’t even qualify as “street” in some instances (they are what I’d call urban) I’m reasonable proud of them!

Settings and exposure wise, I used a Fujifilm X-E1 camera and XF35mm f2 lens.  All the images were shot using aperture priority and an aperture of f8 with ISO set at the base level for this camera of 200.

I have to say, that despite the rather dodgy results, I really enjoyed the freedom of just photographing anything that caught my eye.

It's the return of videos this week too.  My latest masterpiece talking about this week's images and how they were made can be found just by clicking below…

  1. Interesting shots. I find it fascinating what catches peoples 'eye'.
