why? just why?

Two things lately have really got to me.  Really ground my gears.  And yes, I realise these are very much first world problems that aren't really problems at all in the grand scheme of things.  But they still pee me off!

Firstly, it's the Apple Car Play in my, well, car.

It's all wireless, and as long as my phone is connected to the car's wi-fi modem thingy all should be well.  Why then does it only work straight away sometimes?  It doesn't matter whether I don't use the car for a minute or a week, there is absolutely no logic behind the whole thing.

Sometimes it'll start to work straight away and bring up a version of my iPhone's screen on the car's display.  No problem.  Yet there are other times when it doesn't.  But not just that, there are different steps I need to take to get it to actually work.  Sometimes just a click of two or three "buttons" will do it.  Sometimes the process takes a little longer.

And then there are the occasions where I have to completely reset both the car's and the phone's bluetooth and wifi thingies to get it to work.  This can, and does sometimes, happen when I've literally popped out of the car for a minute or so.  Yet I can leave it for a week or longer and it'll work straight away.

Technology eh!?

looks lovely though
And then there's my home theatre set-up.  Nothing complex, just an amp and five speakers in a surround configuration.  (As an aside, we have adjoining neighbours, so a rumbling sub-woofer is wholly inappropriate!).

Anyway, just last week I decided to buy a new TV bench to replace the very 90's / 2000's TV stand we had.  So, I had to disconnect all the components and then put the whole thing back together once I'd gone through the living hell that is trying to understand IKEA instructions.

Guess what?  One of the rear surround speakers wasn't working.  I'd done nothing other than put it all back together as it was so why this was the case, I have no idea.  After re-wiring the speaker several times it finally burst into life.

Yay!!

Except now one of the front ones refused to work.  And then it did, and didn't again.  Now it is working again but I've no idea why as I've changed nothing.

I think that as I rapidly approach 60, technology is ganging up on me and I'm turning from someone who embraced it all into a total luddite who can't understand why we can't go back to pen and paper.

And why, just why IKEA?  Why make your instructions so bloody obtuse?

This week's tech video is a look at a number of vintage lenses I manages to win in an internet auction last November.  How interesting is that???
