Jaws was never my scene and I don't like Star Wars

A line there from one of Queen’s “odder” songs.  “Bicycle Race” was very much the theme to my younger days as a cyclist, and as for the video?  Well it was a 15-year-old boy’s dream!!

Anyway, moving on, I’m really getting into my cycling again.  I ride mostly on my indoor trainer (which brings back memories of pain and suffering from my racing days) but have also completed the odd ride out on some (very) quiet roads.

I think I’m getting fitter, but the pain is quite excruciating.  My doctor wasn’t lying when he told me that because of myeloma I have the skeleton of an 80-year-old.  Riding through that pain barrier is one thing, but the recovery is quite another.

the happy cyclist!!

Also, my mobility is not great as it is.  And cycling rather perversely isn’t helping it.  I’ve set my bike up so it has a quite relaxed position nowhere near the extreme racing position I used to adopt, but my walking is compromised.

So, what to do?

Firstly, I do want to get stronger.  My survival is down, according to my doctors, to my fitness levels.  Without that, they think the pulmonary embolism I suffered in 2015 would have been fatal.  Although I’ll never get super-fit again, every bit helps right?

And secondly, I want to actually achieve something.  I said I wanted to ride up an Alpine climb, but I don’t think that is in any way realistic anymore.  Back to the drawing board on that front then.

  1. Move it or lose it! As long as we're 'trying' it's all good! :D
