triptych

Not a Welsh village (as you might think) but another series of three pictures this week as I continue to make up for lost landscape photography time.

Following on from my “rotten light” post a couple of weeks back, I decided to return to the location of that image, but at sunset to see if I could get something better.

As befits my status of world’s unluckiest landscape photographer, all the cloud that promised to light up as the sun went down just vanished in the space of five minutes leaving me with a cloud free, featureless sky yet again.  But I shot the scene anyway and the softer light really does make for a more pleasing image, I think.

On my way back to my car I stopped and got a second, more intimate shot of the infant River Tawe as it made its way over a cascade.  It helped that the air was so still that the grasses were not moving at all during my long(ish) exposure.

And then, just as I was packing up my luck changed.  With the sun now set to my left, some clouds had bubbled up to the north and had really lit up beautifully.  So, camera and tripod back out I quickly decided on my composition and shot my final image.

Sometimes you don’t get what you come for in this game.  And sometimes you get lucky.  Just not very often for me!
