stay misty for me

Low cloud, fog, drizzle and mist.

Perfect conditions for some ethereal, mysterious woodland photography and ones I was faced with on a recent trip to the southern reaches of the Brecon Beacons.

In my mind I had the sort of images I wanted to make.  All of them shrouded in mist, playing with shapes and just plain lovely.

Until that is the weather changed in an instant and all the fog disappeared!

Yes, the curse that seemingly afflicts 90% of my camera accompanied outings struck again.

Undeterred, I managed to get some shots I quite liked, but these two were my favourites by far.

Fujifilm GFX50R, Fujinon 32-64mm f4
1/125th of a second @ f16, ISO 1600
tripod, self-timer release

The only problems with this image were getting sufficient depth of field to get both the tree and rock in focus, meaning shooting at f16 which then slowed the shutter speed and brought the wind into play.  So I had to up the ISO to 1600 in order to achieve a fast enough shutter speed to freeze the scene.

For this image, I wanted to isolate the flower from the busy forest background, so shot it at my lens's widest aperture of f4.  I also under-exposed the image by 2 stops again to make the flower "pop" against its dark background.
