how do they stay in business?

Disaster!

Following a long hot and dry spell of weather, the heavens opened with a downpour that was accompanied by a loud dipping noise inside my bedroom.

My roof had somehow developed a leak.  So, I needed to ring a roofer to have a look at it for me.  I picked one out of the local directory on the internet and rang the number on their website.

bloody roof

The conversation went exactly like this:

“hello”

“hi, is that (company name) roofers?”

“who?”

“is that the roofer?”

“roofer?”

“yes, are you a roofer?”

“me?”

“yes you – or have I rung the wrong number?”

“no, I’m the roofer”

“so, you are (company name) roofers?”

“yes, that’s what I said”.

I hung up.  I figured I’d ring someone else.

Now, I’m not expecting a one-man-band type company to have class leading customer relation skills.  But if you advertise your business and quote a number that you can be contacted on, how hard can it actually be to answer the phone properly?

He could be the best roofer in the world (and the testimonials on his website certainly seemed to suggest that he is quite good at it), but I just wonder how he gets any business.  How many people would have just automatically assumed they’d dialled the wrong number and hung up?

Anyway, I managed to patch the leak myself for now.  But it will need repairing properly before the winter sets in.  Now, who shall I ring?  Ghostbusters?
