influence

I watched a couple of videos the other night on YouTube about a chap re-designing his office.

designed to make you feel worthless
They stood out for a couple of reasons.  Firstly, they were beautifully shot and edited.  They made my videos look like something thought up on the back of a fag packet and filmed accordingly!

That didn't bother me.  But what did was the actual content.  It had little to do with this man's actual office, but it was all about a lifestyle - the Instagram lifestyle.

Everything featured was expensive; very.

And it all looked so utterly pristine.  Like it had never been used. Probably because, in fact, it hasn't.  From the pictures on the wall to the very desk itself, it was all there to sell things to people.  It was one big advert from start to finish.

The bit that made me laugh most though was the influencer's "analogue note taking and reminder system".  Yes, he called what was effectively a bit of paper and a pencil a "system".  Of course, like everything else in the video it looked unused.  The pencil was perfectly sharpened and the notebook outstanding for its, well, emptiness.  The presenter said that he'd just started a new notebook.  Yeah.  Righto!  And they were of course aesthetically beautiful and reassuringly expensive.

He said he was some sort of digital editor and producer.  One of those jobs that just exists yet serves little or no purpose - other than selling overpriced stuff to gullible people who will then likely never actually use any of it.

But I was hooked.  Completely lured in!  So much so that my new natural, co-ordinated, analogue sleep / wake comfort interface arrives next week.  It's a  pillow.
