it can happen to the worst of us

I read with much hilarity the other day about a junior local government officer who thought he was loading test data into his council's new planning decision system.  He made up decisions with ludicrous outcomes and nonsense language, thinking it was only he and the I.T. department who would see them.

Unfortunately, for him and his employer, he was in fact using the live system and not the new test one.  So the decisions were actually communicated to the planning applicants.

And now, because these decisions are legally binding, applicants face a judicial review to get the outcome overturned and a proper decision with proper reasons behind it issued.

C.....ounty Hall

I've linked to the story below if you're interested.

Anyway, it reminded me of a moment in my work where one of the people I worked with asked me to check over a legal submission they'd made before it was sent off to the Tribunals Service.  "Fine" I said and started to read carefully through the submission.

I then came upon a letter my colleague had written to the appellant in the case, and noticed that instead of giving our address as "The Finance Department", County Hall, etc." had actually, and completely by accident, written "Cuntly Hall" instead!

It was too late as this was a copy of a letter already sent to the appellant from earlier on in the appeal process.  We just hoped that it wouldn't be noticed.  Thankfully the case never actually progressed to a hearing, so the letter was buried amongst archived paperwork.

We did have a good laugh at the error, and actually surmised that given the personalities of most of the people working in the building that its new name was wholly appropriate!

an aside...

writing this reminded me of the time many tears ago when a Radio 1 DJ announced the winner of a competition from Sidcup in Kent as being from Sidcep in K...

As spoonerisms go, it's a pretty disastrous one, especially on live radio!
