I couldn't believe my eyes

There is a small patch of woodland near where I live, and earlier this year my daughter and I installed some bird feeders down there.

We also put a trail cam up and captured some incredible footage of birds of the feeders, though the main culprits were the squirrels trying, and largely succeeding, in stealing the bird's intended food.

So, I bought a couple of squirrel-proof feeders, including one which housed the peanuts behind a cage with openings large enough to let the birds in for a nibble on the nuts, but small enough to keep larger birds and squirrels out.

one of the older feeders - less of a challenge!

This evening, after a few days of bad weather stopped us from venturing there, we popped down to re-fill the feeders.  But on getting there, my new caged peanut feeder was nowhere to be seen!  Now, I'd secured this onto a branch of a tree using a steel hook, which I bent over to stop the feeder from being knocked off its perch.

Instead, it appears the squirrels had either munched or clawed away at the branch until the hook fell out.  The evidence was all over the floor under the tree in the form of wood chippings.

There was, however, no sign of the feeder anywhere.  Now, I don't think the squirrels would have been able to carry it away so it's more likely someone picked it up from the floor and took it home or re-hung it somewhere.

So, I now need to buy another feeder.  And a bigger hook!

And to fit it all, I'll be using my new Gerber multitool.  You can find out exactly what I think of it by clicking the link below:
