all the small things

For the past few years I've immersed myself in the hobby of photography.

I did a lot of photo stuff when I was 18 or 19 years old, years before digital cameras were available.  This involved a Nikon SLR, some manual focus lenses, a hand held light meter and a great, great deal of luck.

I then discovered the even more expensive pastime (if you could call it that) of racing bikes and photography for me stopped.

I retired from bike racing when I hit 40 and became bored.  So bored in fact that I spent a small fortune on a new Nikon digital camera and other shiny things and haven't looked back since.  I'm now on my 4th camera, a Nikon D800 which is spectacularly good.

My favourite things to take pictures of are the sea and mountains.  But given my current state I can't really venture far from home and walking any sort of distance is a huge no no.

My sister (who gets mentioned frequently here) has stepped up to the plate though and loaned me her very expensive macro lens.  This means I can take pictures of all manners of objects really close up without the fear of dropping it.  As I shall be doing this at home this will involve taking lots of pictures of other camera equipment, computer stuff, hi-fi and anything else that geeks like me have in their possession.  Macro lenses with their fast apertures and telephoto length are also great for portraits.  But there's only my wife, daughter and me (oh, and Dexter the dog) here so that's only 10 minutes taken up.

Trouble is my geeky limited imagination means I will shortly run out of things to take pictures of.  Which is where I would like readers of this blog (and I'm assured there are some out there apparently) to come up with suggestions for stuff I can take pictures of either in my house or small, flowerless garden.

I'll post the results on here regularly for anyone who cares to drop in and have a look. Perhaps I'll make it a trend and have a Photo Phthursday (see what I did there?) every week if I get enough suggestions.

Oh, before I go I must pass on some news from today.  I got a tattoo!  Calm down ladies, it's only a small dot on my stomach where next week some radiologists will aim their ray gun as I start radiotherapy.  Innit blud.

  1. There is so much you could turn your macro on......dust motes, cracks in your house, fur on the dog, anything in the garden...blades of grass, weeds, as for your wife and daughter how about body parts? (Get your mind out of the gutter!) fingers, toes, eyelashes.....gosh, the list is endless...... Close ups can be very interesting and sureal.
