the simple things in life

Last Wednesday I had to go into hospital.  And had to stay there.  This upset me  great deal.  In fact, I have to go back in on Monday for another stay after being let home for the weekend.  This won't be so bad as I now know the staff there are the kindest, most professional people you could hope to have care for you.

Anyway, while in there I had to lie pretty well still in bed and was exposed to some very complex and expensive machinery which for someone who gets turned on by technology was an exciting way of taking my mind off the reason for my stay.

But despite that, and the various other tests I had to go through it was the simplest piece of machinery of all that proved to be my lifeline.  A small, portable radio.

Being able to listen to Dr. Ken Bruce * was better medicine than the expensive pain killing drugs I was prescribed.

But there was a problem.  A huge one.

It wasn't that using my radio would somehow cause the hospital to close down or the expensive machines to stop working.

If you like Radio 2 and Dr. Ken, then it's likely you'll enjoy the pop master quiz on every day at 10.30am.  Each morning I settled down to listen and compare my music knowledge to the contestants and each morning at precisely that time, without fail, my doctor and his team of 348 students would shuffle up to my bedside.

It's not good form while they're telling you how long you have left to live to leave your headphones in and ask them if they could possiby pop back in 10 minutes.

I could do it but I'd probably be home longer than just the weekend.

And then I'd miss all the lovely machines.
