waterfalls

I think I might have mentioned before that I'm very lucky living where I do: close to the sea and close to the spectacular scenery that forms the Brecon Beacons.  I honestly wouldn't choose to live anywhere else.

Wedged in between the coast and the mountains is what is known locally as waterfall country.  A series of waterfalls and cascades formed on tributaries of the River Neath - some spectacular, some less so but all with their own beauty and interest.

My favourite waterfall, and possibly my favourite place in the entire World lies on the River Mellte and goes by the name of Sgwd Clun Gwyn, or the Fall of the White Meadow.  I like to get here early in the morning with my flask of tea and some breakfast before anyone else arrives at the same location.

This involves a half hour drive and then a 45 minute (usually muddy) walk and scramble over rocks to reach a small platform where you can sit and breath in the view while enjoying your bacon roll.  Luckily this platform also affords an excellent place from which to photograph the scene before you: a series of 4 falls and cascades that after heavy rain lead to a crescendo of noise that only make the location more magical.

The picture above which I took around a year ago doesn't really do the location justice - I don't think one could.  It couldn't capture the sheer noise and yet the incedibly calming peace you feel when you are there, especially very early in the morning when there is probably no one else around for many miles.

It's worth getting up at 5am for, and you can't say that about many places - especially ones where you get incredibly muddy getting there!
