you stupid boy

Growing up as I did in the 1970s meant my formative years coincided with what was probably the golden era for British situation comedy (or sit-com) series.

There were loads of them, far too many for me to list here.  But I had my favourites: ‘Til Death Do Us Part, Steptoe and Son, The Liver Birds and Porridge to name but a few.  I’m not counting Fawlty Towers in this list as it ran for only two six-part series.

My absolute favourite though was Dad’s Army – a series lampooning the Home Guard formed during World War Two from men either too old or too young to fight. It starred many who had fought bravely in the war (or both World Wars for some) and served up a weekly dose of hilarity so infectious that it is now run on a seemingly endless loop by the BBC.

I started re-watching it in earnest when I first went into hospital back in 2014.  It was my staple Saturday night viewing and has remained so until now even though I’m now on the third re-viewing!

Who do you think you are kidding Mr. Hitler

In an age where “alternative” comedy is the fashion, and foul language deemed essential in most cases, the peaceful, harmless comedy of Dad’s Army is a welcome escape from all that.

I hope they continue to repeat it for ever.
