growing up

I grew up on a remote road just outside a small village.

I had fields to play in, a quiet road to ride my bike on and streams to build dams in.

Opposite my childhood home stood the "Ivy" Tower - a large stone pump house that used to serve an old mine completely covered in ivy (obvs).  It dominated the skyline to the front of the house and provided another place to play.

Then many years ago it was restored.  It was stripped of all its ivy, the stonework made good and any tunnels capped off.

Remarkably it's one of only two such structures remaining in the whole of the UK and as such is now rightly protected from demolition.  And it makes for a lovely photograph or two.

  2. It’s funny how all this was taken for granted. I think we lived an idyllic childhood.
