sheer madness

I can't remember where it originated, but a well-known saying goes along the lines of (and I'm paraphrasing here), that the first definition of madness is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different outcome.

I've just had a brilliant idea...

Wales has been in lockdown (a short break for Christmas aside) from 20 December.  It's the third lockdown we've faced.

After the first one at the start of the pandemic, by August cases of coronavirus were low.  I'm not saying we'd eradicated it, but I think we'd won the first battle of the war.

Then we allowed children back to school and students to university and guess what?  It got worse.  Much worse.

And now, after this latest lockdown has seen cases reduce dramatically, Welsh Government has announced that while the lockdown remains in force, they are to re-open schools in phases after half term next month.  What exactly do they think is going to happen in the face of a more virulent strain of the virus?  Unicorns and rainbows to appear over the horizon?

Why, with vaccine rates rising (I'm having my first jab this afternoon) can't we wait just a little bit longer? I understand fully the frustrations of parents (and possibly the children too!) that more school closures will bring, but we might as well wait just that little bit longer until at least half the population is vaccinated before opening back up.

Surely, repeating what has failed in the past is just another recipe for disaster as children bring the infection home to parents and grandparents, inevitably heaping more pressure on our already creaking health service.

I hope I'm wrong - I really do.  But if I'm not it just reinforces what I feel about the sheer ineptitude of our excuse for a government here in Wales.

  1. Your quote originated with Albert Einstein (just so you know who to credit......you're welcome! LOL) I agree about reopening. What makes the 'powers that be' think it will be any different? BUT, I also see that they're between a rock and a hard place.....at this point I'm not sure what the right decision is. Risk more deaths or collapse the economy.....tough choice. :-/
