out with the new and in with the old

Not exactly the usual vibe at this time of year I know, but...

I bought my first Apple computer in 2007.  A lovely 20" iMac that is still going strong to this day.  But there was something I always missed from my old Windows days - and that was the "clickety clack" of a good old mechanical keyboard.

Every Apple computer I've bought has had an ultra-modern, ultra-slim keyboard.  They look lovely and work perfectly well and in absolute silence, but I always craved an older style much noisier one.

I scoured eBay for years but could never find one good enough.  They were always a bit grubby looking and although I would obviously have cleaned anything thoroughly, I just didn't think they suited my office environment.

Until last week that is and this beauty came up on that auction site.  Boxed, unused and in absolutely mint condition I couldn't resist buying it.  And, so, here I am typing this latest blog entry on my new (very old) keyboard.

The only problem is power.

It's a wireless keyboard (one of Apple's first) and requires 4 AA batteries to get going.  I can't imagine they'd last that long, so I searched my loft for an old battery charger I knew I had.  (That is the charger is old, not that it only charges old batteries.)

Anyway, for now, whenever I need to write something of any length, I'll get out this old keyboard and be transported back to the 1990s, annoy anyone in earshot and enjoy every analogue moment of it.

  1. How a keyboard sounds/feels is VERY important! (It took me WEEKS to find the 'perfect' one!) ;)
