this has to stop but how?

This week I have been involved in multiple car accidents, had my wi-fi cut off, had my computer infected by numerous viruses, committed tax fraud and had a criminal investigation into me launched.

How do I know all this?

Because I've had several telephone calls alerting me to all these, erm, SCAMS.

Just how are these people allowed to operate?  Most come from India, although it's not solely a (sub) continental problem.

Now being young and of (reasonably) sound mind, I'm easily able to identify these calls for what they are, but what about older and perhaps more easily confused or led people?  I can imagine someone falling for this and parting with money (as that is always the end result of these calls - as if a cash payment will make a criminal investigation go away), or worse becoming extremely distressed and even being killed by the worry.

inside an actual scam call centre

It seems though that as soon as one of these call centres (because that's what they are - sophisticated "businesses") is shut down another opens in its place and carries on regardless.

I've done what I can to alert my in-laws to this scum (and no, that's not a mis-spelling of scam), to not answer calls from numbers they don't recognise, to know that if it's a genuinely important call someone will likely leave a message and to just be careful, but I worry that one day they will fall victim.

Who knows, one day I will as these scams become more and more sophisticated?

There are a number of on-line characters who act to expose and call out these scammers - some with hilarious results.  But it's no laughing matter in reality.

As the title to this post says, this has to stop.  But just how do the authorities actually do that?

  1. I don't think it will ever go away. All we can do is ignore them. (Although, just between you and me, I sometimes like to 'play' with them for fun. It's really hysterical when they catch on! LOL)

  2. When they say, “Hello, my name is Jennifer/Simon.....” in an accent that makes it difficult for them even to pronounce their “name”, I can’t stop myself from saying, “Seriously? Jennifer/Simon?”.

  3. But have you bought an iPad from Amazon - three times in a week? And do you have a problem with your BY broadband.? (We don’t even have BT broadband!) etc etc.
