all the gear...

...no idea!

One of the most challenging aspects of landscape photography is composition.  And in particular dialling in those last few bits, or fine tuning if you like.

For years I've used a ball head on my tripod.  It's a simple device allowing multi-angled movement.  But I found getting that last bit just right, particularly with heavier medium format kit loaded up, was getting more difficult as I get older and weaker.

I'd always fancied getting a geared head.  These have three axis movement and afford for much easier micro adjustment.  Trouble is they are ridiculously expensive.  Four figure expensive in some cases.

But just recently as I was getting more and more frustrated at my inability to get something as simple as levelling a horizon spot on, I bit the bullet and pulled the trigger (together with any other metaphors) and bought a Benro geared tripod head.

Thankfully this cost me a lot less than I expected (£150) and has revolutionised my shooting.  I can now easily dial in micro adjustments that before would leave me shouting at my tripod head as it would simply refuse to do what I wanted it to.

Now, this was not the fault of the head I would emphasise.  It was down to my inability to make those adjustments.  That's not to say this type of head is for everyone.  Adjustments are slow and range of movement is not as all-encompassing as a ball head.

But I'm all for investing in something that's going to make my life easier!
