it's not all about the gear

I'll be the first to freely admit that part of the allure of photography for me is the technical side.

I love cameras, lenses and all the gear and paraphernalia surrounding photography and videography.

But you don't need a raft of expensive gear to enjoy photography - and particularly landscape photography where fast focussing, bright lenses and cameras that shoot with rapid frame-rates simply aren't necessary.  In fact, when shooting landscapes less is more.

Late last year I set myself a challenge to source, buy and use a complete landscape photography kit for less than £200.  I succeeded with plenty of change to spare, and by and large enjoyed every minute of shooting with my budget kit.

I made a video for my YouTube channel detailing the whole process, and you can see it here:

I think it proved beyond doubt that you can enjoy landscape photography with anything that can take pictures.  It's all about getting out and about in the fresh air, exploring and enjoying your surroundings.

Yes, when looked at it great detail, or when printed large, images made with my medium format camera and lenses are undeniably better than those shot with my budget camera.  But if you're only posting images online then the kit I bought is more than good enough.

  1. You buy the gear.....I'll just sit here and enjoy the end product! ;)
