what a bleedin' palaver
Well, I finally wen and did it!
After a few years of promising I'd get myself a micro four thirds camera system, and with it the OM System 90mm macro lens (some say the best macro lens ever produced) I went ahead and bought them - the lens and an old Olympic camera to stick it on.
And they're a joy. I mean, just look at this picture of a caddis fly.
But there was a problem. I needed to update the camera's firmware so it could work at its best with the lens. No problem I thought, with my Fujifilm and Nikon cameras you just download the latest issue, copy it onto a memory card and from there onto the camera.Oh no! Not with Olympus.
I had to download their dedicated OM Workshop application onto my Mac. Easy enough you'd think? But to get it to work meant diving into the Mac's recovery portion, and deep into its security profile.
Now, I've been a Mac user for 18 years or so and have never, ever had to do this to install a piece of software. And even as a seasoned user, when following the (incomplete it must be said) instructions I could find, every step of the way I was certain I'd be bricking my MacBook.
I did eventually get it to work, but thought what if I were a new, or inexperienced computer user. Those steps were scary enough as it was, especially when everything went blank for a few minutes.
About as blank as whoever designed these systems!
Anyway, if you'd like to watch a video of me introducing my newest camera and lens to the world, along with my reasoning behind getting said kit, just click below. It's compulsory...
